Potassium is one of the major electrolytes and minerals in the body. It is essential to all organizms and is the major cation (positively charged ions) in the cell cytoplasm with a wide variety of electrochemical and catalytic functions for enzyme systems. With sodium, the other “electrolyte”, potassium participates in the maintenance of normal water balance, osmotic equilibrium and acid-base balance. Potassium participates with Calcium in the regulation of neuromuscular activity.
